When I saw the trailer of the new Wolverine movie on Youtube, I was struck with awe. Hugh Jackman, the actor who plays the Wolverine, had amazed X-Men fans for almost two decades with his great performances as the popular superhero. Since his debut as the Wolverine in 2000, Hugh Jackman starred in six movies such as X-Men (2000), X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). His character also appeared in other movies as cameos such as X-Men: First Class (2011), Deadpool (2016), and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). His final movie as the Wolverine is scheduled to release in March 2017 entitled Logan.
The movie is based on the comics series called Old Man Logan, which is set in the future where the villains have taken control of the United States and most of the superheroes have all been hunted down and killed. The Wolverine, also known as Logan, is all alone and has to find the remaining surviving superheroes in order to unite and make a comeback against the villains. In the comics series, Logan has become very old, which caused his healing factor ability to deteriorate. This foreshadows that he is losing his immortality.
The trailer starts with the song “Hurt” by the late Johnny Cash in which we see The Wolverine and Charles Xavier have aged significantly since the last X-Men movie. What I really love is the song choice for the trailer. Johnny Cash’s “Hurt” fits perfectly for Logan. It’s a depressing song about old age and helps X-Men fans reflect on Hugh Jackman’s epic role as the Wolverine. In one scene where Logan is shirtless in the bathroom looking into the mirror, there are clearly visible scars on his back, which means that his healing factor is failing just like in the comics series. This leaves many fans worried as there is a possibility that the Wolverine might die at the end. Throughout the trailer, we see Logan traveling with this unknown girl who is trying to escape from a bad organization. This reminds me of the critically-acclaimed video game called The Last of Us. Logan is Joel, the girl is Ellie, and the bad guys in the trailer are the Fireflies. The Last of Us is an awesome game with an amazing story. I would love to explain everything but this blog post is getting too long so let’s just say Logan looks strangely familiar with The Last of Us. In the last scene of the trailer, we see Logan and the girl standing in a forest, where it looks like Logan has just buried someone. Everybody in the Youtube comment section are crying about how the person who Logan just buried was Charles Xavier. We don’t know if that is true, but if it is then that means the entire X-Men series are coming to an end.
Seeing this trailer made me so hyped up. I cannot wait to watch this in the theater. To be honest I am not a huge fan of the X-Men, but the Wolverine is definitely one of my favorite superheroes besides Batman. Knowing that this will be the last time Hugh Jackman will don the Adamantium claws makes me depressed. No matter how much we love Hugh Jackman as the Wolverine, we have to let him go. The actor is currently 48 and we have to accept that he cannot be doing this forever. All in all, we should be thankful that Hugh Jackman dedicated so much to the superhero and performed with so much intensity and passion for all these years. There will never be another Wolverine as great as Hugh Jackman. Thank you for everything, we will miss you.
